Course information

Introduction

This one-day course is aimed at veterinary surgeons with little or no experience of echocardiography and those who feel they could make much more of their cardiac examinations.
The day will be a mixture of lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions, with emphasis on getting as much hands-on time as possible. Topics covered will include a re-cap of ultrasound physics and machine setup, indications for echocardiography and equipment needed, the basic echocardiographic views and their interpretation. A basic overview of Doppler and its use will also be covered.

Course objectives:

  • Basics of ultrasound physics refresher – how ultrasound works, the limitations, how to work the machine and how to optimise the cardiac image.
  • Indications – why and when to use echocardiography in practice
  • A logical approach – how to perform a basic, right-sided echo exam
  • Brief introduction to Doppler
  • Identify normal vs. abnormal
  • Put it into practice – get stuck in!

Equipment and Facilities

IMV imaging will provide all the necessary ultrasound equipment.

**Please note that because of the difficulty providing animals for scanning, delegates are kindly requested to bring a friendly dog with them for the duration of the day. It is important that the dogs can be clipped as appropriate for a complete abdominal ultrasound exam.**

Schedule

The day will be informal and relaxed with maximum time for hands-on learning. Arrive for tea and coffee from 8:30am, ready to begin the lecture at 9am. We’ll aim to finish the day by 4.30pm. This will count for 6 hours of CPD. Places are limited to a maximum of 12 delegates so book your place early to avoid disappointment. Course notes, refreshments and lunch will be provided.
