Course information

About this course

Want to get started with echocardiography but confounded by cardiac ultrasound? This 2 part course is here to help start you on your echo expeditions and improve your practical scanning ability.

The first day of the course includes a variety of lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions with emphasis on getting as much hands-on time as possible.

Throughout the day topics covered include; how to optimise use of your equipment for cardiac ultrasound, indications for performing echocardiography, which cardiac views offer the most diagnostic information and how to achieve them. You will learn and practice obtaining the right-sided echocardiographic views and discuss how best to interpret them including basic measurements. A brief overview of Doppler use and relevant case discussions will also be covered.

Having attended the basic echo part 1 day and put your skills into practice, delegates are invited to come back to discuss some cases you’ve seen and hone your practical skills.

The second day focuses on continued practical learning including further optimisation of your right sided views, use of Doppler during an echo exam, both colour and spectral Doppler. Left-sided echocardiography views will be considered with an option for practical application. Where possible, delegates should bring some example cases they have examined during time in practice following attendance of part 1. A case-based discussion will follow the practical elements, including discussion about cardiac case decision making.

Key learning objectives

On day 1 the course will cover:

  • A refresher on basic ultrasound physics – Understand how an image is formed and how to use the machine to optimise a cardiac image.
  • Indications for echocardiography – when to perform it and why?
  • How to perform a basic, right-sided echo exam including long-axis and short-axis views.
  • Learn the normal appearance of the cardiac anatomy and how to interpret common changes observed in 2D echo.
  • What can be objectively measured from right-sided views and how should these be interpreted?
  • Put it into practice – use the techniques and knowledge on the day to practice your ultrasound skills on live dogs.

On day 2 delegates can expect to:

  • Further optimise your right-sided practical echo ultrasonography - continue to develop your skills on live dogs.
  • Understand the principles of Doppler, how and when to use it.
  • Consider how to perform left-sided echo views and which cases these can be utilised in to improve your diagnostic assessment.
  • Case discussion: what have you seen recently? Use the ‘hive mind’ to discuss recent cases and cardiac decision making problems.

Equipment and Facilities

IMV imaging will provide all the necessary ultrasound equipment.

Please note that because of the difficulty providing animals for scanning, delegates are kindly requested to bring a friendly dog with them for the duration of the day. Kennelling accommodation for the dogs will be available to use if required.

It is important that the dogs can be clipped as required for echocardiography.

Did you know - every delegate who brings a dog is entered into a prize draw on the course day to win a £75 Amazon voucher??!!

Schedule

Each day will be informal and relaxed with maximum time for hands-on learning.

Arrive for tea and coffee from 8:30am, ready to begin the lecture at 9am. We’ll aim to finish by 4.30pm which will count for 7 hours of CPD.

Places are limited to a maximum of 12 delegates so book your place early to avoid disappointment.

Course notes, refreshments and lunch will be provided.
